The Necessity of a Cancun Vacation
We are all incessantly hearing the dire economic news. High unemployment, the rising cost of living, gas prices – we understand that life is expensive and likely always will be. Regardless of the expense, some things are simply necessary. There is surviving and then there is living – and for me, truly living means taking a vacation once in a while. It requires prioritizing and generally a little saving over time, but I get away for a Cancun vacation once a year. Cancun is such a deal, though, that a little cash really goes far.
Cancun is on the eastern coast of the Mexican Yucatan, meaning warm Caribbean waves crashing against the white sandy beaches. The sand on Cancun’s beaches is actually crushed coral that does not get scalding hot like most beaches. In and around those warm, relaxing beaches is where I, like lot of first-time visitors, spent most of my time. It is pretty easy to do – with all the activities close by the sea. The Great Mayan Barrier Reef is spectacular and just off the coast. The fish are all so colorful – like one of those aquariums in a doctor’s office, except on a massive scale. And the thick schools of tiny fish are just amazing to watch – the way they move in unison, like they all think the same way at the same time. The reef itself is so alive and the coral is as colorful and diverse as a tropical garden. Locals operate dozens of scuba and snorkeling services and they do a great job of providing information about all of the species of life you see.
The beaches and the diving, parasailing and fishing are great, and they are all so affordable – even in a group. But a couple more Cancun Mexico vacations and I discovered that there is plenty of allure away from the water.
Cancun holiday celebrations are big deals to the locals, and there are always religious or historical festivals going on. The genuine, local cuisine is often better than that at big resorts and again, very cheap.
In Cancun spring break is not the insane party it once was, but the nightlife can be wild as you want. The dance clubs in the hotel zone have catered to the college set for years, and for six weeks each spring they are packed to the rafters every night.
Down the Riviera Maya south of Cancun there are all sorts of resort towns with incredible hotels and restaurants, but if you continue on you can see some real history. This area has tons of archaeological sites and guides that can take you. Chichen-Itza is one of the most breathtaking places I have ever seen on a Cancun vacation. The Mayan ruins are on an enormous scale but cut right out of the jungle.
