The Mughal Empire was one of the powerful empires that ruled India. The Mughal Empire lasted for some 300 years. During this time many famous forts, masjids, palaces and gardens were built by Mughal rulers. According to many historians the Mughal architecture is a fine blend of Islamic, Persian and Indian style of architecture. You will find many buildings in India that are a fine example of this style of architecture. Some of the important buildings that were made by Mughals in Delhi are:
1. Red Fort: This is a magnificent building that is made up of red sandstone. It was built by Shah Jahan in 1639 and is situated very close to Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. The fort has a covered area of almost 3 kilometers with boundary walls that can be as high as 20 meters. Under the Delhi Tourism scheme many cultural and food festivals are organized here.
2. Humayun’s Tomb: This tomb was built by wife of Humayun for her beloved husband. It is considered as the predecessor to the Taj Mahal because of its resemblance to it. The monument is one of the finest examples of the Mughal style of architecture. The fort started its construction in 1562 and took almost three years to get completed. The fort is located in the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi.
3. Old Fort: This fort was not built by Mughals. It was built by Pandavas who had their capital here by the name of Indraprastha. The fort served as the seat of administration for many Mughal emperors. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor used this fort to recollect and strengthen his army to fight against the Britishers during the revolt of 1857. Today this fort is known for its boating facilities and light and sound program that is held every evening.
4. Jama Masjid: This is one of the largest and highly popular mosques in the world. It is situated in Old Delhi and is very close to the Red Fort. The Jama Masjid was built by Shah Jahan in 1656 and has the capacity of accommodating more than 2500 pilgrims at a time. The crowds gather here on every Friday for their evening prayers or Namaz. The Jama Masjid was in the spotlight for the terrorist attack that took place in 2006. The monument has been shot in various Bollywood movies also. Various non vegetarian delicacies that are served here are famous all over Delhi. People from different parts of the city come here to enjoy this food.
