If you are planning a city break in Spain, then Barcelona should be at the top of your list. The capitol city of the Catalan region, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain, and the largest along the European Mediterranean coastline. A city alive and buzzing with atmosphere, Barcelona has to be seen in the flesh to be fully appreciated. Brimming with history and heritage, this superb city has both a wonderful atmospheric old town center, and a more contemporary and ultra-modern surrounding area with beautiful blend of stunning architecture. Barcelona has something for everyone.
The city is divided into area known as Barrios, each one with its own set of individual characteristics. Some are great tourist areas crammed full with world-class sights, sounds and tastes, whilst others are quality residential areas within easy reach of the attractions that millions of visitors flock to this city to see each and every year.
Barrio Gotic (The Gothic Quarter) is the real heart of this superb city. Many of the buildings to be seen here date from Medieval times. It is an extraordinary place of beauty and wonderment. You can walk down its typically narrow streets and find yourself at an opening onto a huge open plaza, such as the celebrated Placa Reiel, with its beautiful fountain and palm trees. This neighborhood is also home to the famous Cathedral of Barcelona, the Catalan Government Hall, and the Barcelona City Hall too. You’ll also find some world-class tourist shopping here. It’s also home to the Picasso Museum, and Els Quatre Gats, (The Four Cats), an old historic restaurant that was a regular haunt of Picasso himself.
If you love that old world city feel, then Cuitat Vella, (The Old Town of Barcelona), is going to prove hard to beat. One of the main features here is Las Ramblas, a Boulevard that wends for 1.2Km all the way down to the sea shore. One stretch, known locally as La Rambla de les Flors (the Boulevard of Flowers), is littered with flowers, both for show and for sale, whilst another stretch has dozens of vendors showing and selling beautiful, multi-colored song birds in their ornate wooden and metal cages. It’s always a busy place, packed with both locals and tourists enjoying themselves well into the wee hours of the morning.
With its narrow streets, (so narrow that lines of washing stretch across the street from one apartment to another), and its tall buildings, many of which are of Medieval origin, La Ribera is another classic old world part of the city which will delight. To wander its narrow winding concourses is like taking a step back in time, and there are several lovely little bars and cafes where you can take some refreshment along the way.
El Raval Barrio has its own unique characteristic that makes it a must for the seasoned tourist, but be on your guard. The area does have a reputation and pickpockets are known to operate here. However, it is unique with its own blend of bars, cafes and privately owned clothes shops where you’ll discover some wonderful one-off designer clothing. It has a character all of its own and is busy both day and night. If you can find lodgings in this particular Barrio, there are two splendid fresh food markets nearby.
If you want a break from the hustle and bustle of city life here in Barcelona, take some time out to visit Ciutadella Park, a green haven in the middle of this exciting city. There are numerous fountains and a lovely lake to visit. Nearby there is also a great residential area, offering a fine place to find local lodgings in quiet surroundings yet close by to the city center.
