Hout Bay Harbour is located 40 minutes’ drive from Cape Town in the valley of the Atlantic Seaboard, towards the end of the scenic Cape Peninsula drive. It is a fully functional harbour where numerous ships, boats and fishing vessels dock, and it offers visitors a number of worthwhile attractions that make for an enjoyable afternoon outing.
Visitors to the harbour almost always start their visit with a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk. From the boardwalk one can take a closer look at the hundreds of ships and boats of all shapes, sizes and colours that are docked here, and enjoy the view of the calm waters flanked to the North by the lush mountains of the Table Mountain National Park. Fishing vessels bringing in the day’s catch of Tuna, Snoek and Crayfish can also be seen as they arrive along the boardwalk.
There are a number of short cruises from Hout Bay, and one of the most popular is the cruise to Seal Island on a glass-bottomed boat. This cruise is approximately one hour long, and its final destination is a small island that is completely inhabited by a thriving local seal population. The glass-bottomed boat is the ideal viewing vessel for this journey as passengers are able to view the abundant marine life below the boat during the cruise. Cruises to a nearby shipwreck and to the area below Chapman’s Peak are also available.
There is a small beach nearby which is popular among locals who take their dogs for walks along the water’s edge, and among anglers who catch sardines and other fish. On occasion, the beach is used as the location for wedding receptions and other functions. There is also a popular surfing spot nearby, known as Dungeons, which is used as the location for the annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing competition.
Mariner’s Wharf, located near the entrance of the harbour, has a popular pearl factory where unique and unusual freshwater pearl jewellery designs can be purchased. It also has a seafood restaurant that serves some of the best freshly caught seafood in the area. The restaurant has two levels – the upper tier is for diners who wish to sit down and enjoy a gourmet seafood meal, while the lower tier serves fried seafood at lower prices than the upper tier.
Hout Bay offers visitors the chance to experience an authentic harbour, enjoy sumptuous fresh seafood and spend a leisurely afternoon taking in the natural beauty of the area. It is a must-see for all visitors to Cape Town.
