Located at a distance of just 10 km from Varanasi, is a city where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment. The city is Sarnath, where for the first time Lord Buddha taught about Dharma and the Buddhist Sangha came into being. Counted among one of the holiest cities for the Buddhist believers, Sarnath is thronged by thousands of Buddhist pilgrims every year.
Buddha’s First Sermon At Sarnath:
Buddha, who attained enlightenment in Bodhgaya came to Sarnath where he found his first followers. It were these five people who became Buddha’s first disciples and to whom he taught his first sermons. After hearing his teachings, these disciples also became enlightened and from there onwards the Buddhist sangha or the community of Monks was started. It was these monks who later went on building different Buddhist temples or Stupas in Sarnath.
Sarnath Stupas:
Stupas are basically a structure where the relics of Buddha and Buddhism are stored, that are visited by Buddhist followers all year-long. Sarnath is a very well know site for watching these famous stupas. Some of them are:
Dhamekh stupa: Containing the remains of Lord Buddha, the 34 meter high Dhamek stupa is really a very wondrous structure. The entire structure is cylindrical and has a diameter of 28 mts. Built partly in stone and bricks, Dhamekh Stupa is a must visit while planning Sarnath travel.
Choukhandi Stupa: Built during the Gupta rule, Choukhandi Stupa is believed to be the same site where Lord Buddha met his first disciples. Earlier the stupa was built as a terraced temple that was modified in an octagonal shape in the later years.

Sarnath Temple: Digambara Jain Temple is a popular Jain pilgrim center located here.
It is believed that it is the same temple where Shreyanshnath, the 11th Jain tirthankara was born.
Sarnath Archaeological Museum: In this museum you can see a magnificent statue of the Buddha turning the wheel of law.
Asoka Pillar: The majestic Asoka pillar records visit of emperor Asoka to Sarnath. Destroyed during the Turkish invasion, today you can see its ruin in the Sarnath museum.
Deer Park: Mrigadava or Deer Park is the same place where Buddha gave his first sermons to his five disciples.
