With a 2008 population of 810,000, Valencia is located on the central Mediterranean coast of Spain and is the country’s third-largest city. Since the 13th century it has been one of the Mediterranean’s major cities, and has held a major influence over the fate of Spain. In fact, the main financiers of Christopher Columbus’ famous voyage were influential merchants from Valencia.
Valencia has done much to establish itself as a major industrial and modern city, however the old city and its surroundings still feature much great heritage. Valencia’s fine Gothic Cathedral, with its octagonal bell tower was completed in the 15th century. If you’re up to the task, climb the 207 steps for the best view of Valencia in the city. Plaza de la Reina is the old Town Square, and has much historical character. The Gothic Lonja de la Seda (silk exchange) was built between 1482 and 1548, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the main tourist attractions in Valencia. For another great taste of Valencia heritage, walk the winding old streets of the Barrio del Carmen and you’ll see many ancient buildings as well as experience the bustling present-day Valencia.
Today, Valencia is more touted and visited for its modern tourist destination “The City of Arts and Sciences”, which is built at the end of the old riverbed Turia. After the great flood of Valencia in 1957, the river was bypassed, and this new cultural and architectural complex was subsequently situated here, construction beginning in 1996. The first ultra-modern structure to open was L’Hemisferic, an Imax Theatre, Laserium and Planetarium. Following were an interactive science museum, a landscaped modernistic walk with indigenous plants that also features an art gallery, L’Oceanographic, which is the largest oceanographic aquarium in Europe, as well as a modern bridge and main square.
Also of interest are the bridges crossing the rest of the dry riverbed, as well as the musical fountain in the Plaza del Cordillo, which is a central hub of Valencian life. And be sure to try the national Spanish dish paella which originated from Valencia.
