Malaga is located on Spain‘s southern Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) about 100 km east of the Straight of Gibraltar. Costa del Sol is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and Malaga is the entry point.
Picasso Museums
Although the city is a modern, pulsing vacation spot with beautiful Mediterranean beaches and a lively nightlife, there is much well preserved history outside of the beach zone. The city was founded by Phoenicians over 3000 years ago, and since been conquered by the Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and finally modern Christian Spain.
The busy port has been operating continuously since 600 BC, and there is much commerce and a huge tourist service industry. The old town is a great reminder of Malaga’s history, located behind the harbor and featuring quaint little streets with monuments, open squares, boutiques and cafes. Plaza de la Constitucion is the main square, and the tree-lined Main Street, Calle Marques de Larios is a great pedestrian walking Boulevard. Alongside is the 11th century Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress, which now serves as an archaeological museum. Another Moorish monument is the Gibralfaro Castle which offers panoramic views of the city. You can also tour the city walls which include Phoenician, Roman, Visigothic, Arab and Spanish remains. Also be sure to check out the Baroque Cathedral.
Picasso was born here, so of course there are several Picasso Museums. There are also quite a few other excellent museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the City Museum. Malaga also has wonderful Botanical Gardens. The official Malaga bus tour is a 1 1/2 hour trip that is well worth the cost as it is will cover many of the wonderful monuments and features of this exciting tourist city.
