Iquique, Chile
Situated in the north of Chile, the coastal city of Iquique is among the most attractive in the country. Known as a “city of eternal sunshine”, this town is a pleasure to explore and a perfect stop over if you’re crossing into Peru. Thanks to its international airport, it’s also a gateway to the fantastic Atacama Desert and its myriad natural wonders. The city itself has a lot to offer, including fascinating ancient archeological sites to explore in the surrounding area. If you want to relax for a few days, soak up the sun, and immerse yourself in the culture of northern Chile, Iquique is the ideal destination.
Laid back atmosphere and beautiful colonial buildings characterize this charming and bustling port town. This feature is even revealed in the city’s name, which derives from the native Aymara language: ique-ique means “place of rest and tranquility”.
One of the most visited cities in Chile, Iquique’s attraction is probably its history, which dates back to pre-Columbian times. In these ancients times, native tribes lives by the sea and survived from the collection of guano, bird excrement, an important natural resource in many South American countries. Ancient civilizations left ruins and petroglyphs, but very little is known from their actual way of life.
Spanish conquerors then came and settled in Iquique, which was for a long time a territory belonging to Bolivia. Iquique was a major nitrate industry center, as well as an export center for silver coming from nearby mines. Iquique bloomed in the 1830′s thanks to its nitrate production. Grandiose mansions and modernity was brought to the city thanks to this blossoming industry. Even an earthquake in the beginning 1800′s was not enough to stop Iquique’s growth, as the city immediately rebuilt itself.
Iquique and its surrounding land became part of Chile after the Pacific War, when Bolivia and Peru lost a big part of their territory to Chile. Famous in the history of the city, the battle of Iquique, which took place on May 21, 1879, is still commemorated today by the Chilean people.
After the nitrate industry declined, Iquique turned to copper and started exporting this natural resource, by building modern port infrastructure. As of today, Iquique is still one of Chile’s largest ports. It also boasts the largest duty free zone in South America. Because of its modernity, beautiful location, and agreeable climate, Iquique remains one of the most pleasant destinations in northern Chile.
