Safari in Kenya

Kenya Safari Types

Many people dream of going on a Kenya safari and picture being thrown around the back of an open top 4×4 as it off-roads on dusty trails, binoculars in hand as you search relentlessly for a glimpse of lions lazily soaking up the midday sun. Although this is the classic image of a typical safari, the majority of people fail to realize the sheer diversity and range that a Kenya safari can offer today. The options cover a multitude of levels on luxury, wilderness, adventure and comfort – from specialist interest and adventure safaris to hot air ballooning and beach camping, with every avenue being catered for.

Traditional Road Safaris

The traditional road safari involves travelling from the main towns and cities to the desired game reserves via road. Time is a necessary requirement, allowing you to really appreciate the beauty on offer as you amble through the wilderness. This type of excursion is quite often embarked on in groups, meaning you get to experience the thrills with people from all walks of life. Camping safaris involve living amongst Kenya’s bushes and wildlife in tents for several nights within the game reserves and national parks. Listening to all manner of large, dangerous wildlife nearby whilst you try to sleep may seem nerve-racking but it will certainly be an unforgettable and exhilarating experience on your Kenya safari.

Fly-in Kenya Safari

A Fly-in safari is a great, albeit safer, way of experiencing the best of Kenya and is ideal for those limited on time as light aircraft are used to whiz you from your accommodation to any of the national reserve or game park airstrips, giving you an astounding bird’s eye view of the landscape on offer. Logistical issues are taken care of and the obvious added advantage of altitude gives you a more favorable chance of squeezing more into an air safari, as they are otherwise known, than you would be able to on a more traditional road-based Kenya safari. A fly-in usually involves guests being flown from one set of accommodation to your chosen game reserve, then on to another for an overnight stay by a pilot who will double as a qualified guide, remaining with you for the duration of your adventure. Game drives will also be undertaken in between flights, enabling you to sample the wonder of the scenery and species on offer up close and personal. Nevertheless, however you decide to experience a Kenya safari you’re sure to have the time of your life.
