Once known as Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh has becoming one of the “must-see” places in Vietnam. The city has many faces. Ho Chi Minh can seem hectic, with thousands of motorbikes and scooter filling the road with the sounds of their horns honking in the air. But when you duck into a narrow, surreptitious alleyway, you found another face of this city. Find a surprisingly simple and delicious soup made by an old chef inside one of these alleyways. No wonder this city has becoming a new favorite destination for tourists from around the world. From colonial landmarks to native architecture, brand-new skyscrapers to the scenic riverside, feverish intersections to open-air markets, evidence of the new and old Vietnam is everywhere. The evolution of the country over the last few decades has left avid observers spellbound. A trip to Ho Chi Minh City is likely to incite a similar sense of curiosity and wonderment.
Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City is the economic centre of Vietnam, and is booming with new hotels, chic bars and trendy clubs. There are plenty of old landmarks worth visiting and interesting markets where you can get a lot of high-quality antiques and souvenirs. On Saigon’s doorstep is the Mekong Delta, with its burgeoning markets, luminous green rice fields, Khmer pagodas, and fruit and flower orchards. The best way to view this tropical wonderland is by boat.
Most things in Saigon are quite cheap, you can get by very well on a daily budget of US$ 35, still be able to have a really good time. If you want to stay inn the fancy hotels and live it up a little more, a daily budget of US$ 75 should be quite sufficient.
For backpackers, straight up to the these three main streets for budget travelers: Pham Ngu Lao Street, Bui Vien Street and De Tham Street in District 1, just a short walk (10-15 minutes) from Ben Thanh Market. These areas jammed with 5-10 room mini-hotels offering prices around US$ 6. If you can’t find a room by asking the hotels, try to find one of the ladies dressed in a blue uniform, stating something about tourist rooms. These ladies will help you finding a place to stay in a matter of minutes. And they are all over these three streets; it is easy to found one.
One of the recommended budget hotels is Guesthouse Diep Anh. It’s a modern, clean, safe, comfortable, and a friendly family-rum guesthouse. Located in one of the alleys at Pham Ngu Lao Street, Diep Anh offering a quiet place to rest after a day explore in the city. The rate is reasonable, starts from US$ 24 you can get a Deluxe Double Bed with en suite private bath with warm water. Nearby are many sight-seeing, shopping centers, markets, pubs, restaurants, etc. It is convenient to walk around every sight-seeing spots.
