Entitled as ‘The Land of The Rising Sun’, Japan has been a popular destination for tourism activities. With its 16 World Heritage Sites that is housed within the country, including Himeji Castle and Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Japan has attracted more than 8.3 million foreign visitors yearly. As Japan has a long and deep cultural history, it made Japan rich in unique and diverse folk tradition, architectural style, and delectable dishes spread out on its regions. One such region that holds a potential to be one of the tourism hot spot for Japan’s tourism activities is Kyoto.
Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshu and it has a population estimated close to 1.5 million. Although now Kyoto is the capital of Kyoto prefecture, it was once the seat of Japan Imperial reign in 794 until the imperial court was moved to Tokyo in 1869 at the time of the Imperial Restoration.
Kyoto is quite popular among the tourists as it housed abundant historical and religious buildings. Most people travel to Kyoto to visit one of the most celebrated temples of Japan, Kiyomizu-dera. Literally translated as Pure Water Temple, it derived its name from the pure water that is falling from Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills East of Kyoto, in which the temple is located. Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below. The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
Another one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually, is the Kinkaku-ji or the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. This temple is famous as the building is covered with golden-leaf coating which generate a stunning beauty of golden shimmer along its tranquil pond. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of 17 locations comprising the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site.
In Southern part of Kyoto visitors could immerse themselves in one of the most spectacular torii gates experiences in Fushimi Inari Shrine. It is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings and ultimately lead into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari.
Kyoto is not all about historical buildings. One of the top attractions that would make people to travel to Kyoto is to watch the popular local events, Gion Matsuri. It is famous for the marvelous procession of huge and visually stunning floats being paraded in the city for a whole month of July. The highlight events of Gion Matsuri takes place on the opposite side of Kamo River, where the floats are displayed within about a half kilometer of the intersection of Karasuma and Shijo streets and some can even be entered by tourists. The area becomes most exciting in the evenings from 18:00 until 23:00, where the streets are closed to traffic and the area swells with food stands, drink vendors, and other festival hallmarks.
